Conference Description

The 7th Conference on Sustainable Mobility and Intelligent Transport Systems is organized by the Department of Public Works of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and aims to highlight the strategic direction of Cyprus, in line with the directions of the European Union, towards sustainable development, focusing on major issues that connect mobility, the economy and the environment.

 

It aims to present the recent challenges and developments regarding the promotion of sustainable mobility, multimodal transport and intelligent systems, but also the development opportunities towards a sustainable, smart and green environment for Cyprus.

 

In the context of the Conference, issues related to Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans in Cyprus, electric mobility, the Green Deal and Fitfor55, new infrastructures and intelligent multimodal transport systems will be discussed.

 

At the same time, there will be an exhibition that will host organizations active in projects and actions of sustainable mobility and intelligent transport systems.

Multimodality in Transportation: Challenges and Development Opportunities

Andreas Nikiforou

Andreas is the head of the Directorate of Public Passenger Transport of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works. He is a graduate of the Higher Institute of Technology in the field of Mechanical Engineering, holding a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a master's degree in Operational Research from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He was Fleet Manager and Workshop Manager in large-scale companies such as Unicars (Audi, VW, SEAT, Skoda) and Carlsberg Group. In 2006 he was appointed to the position of Transport Officer in the Technical Sector of the Road Transport Department. He was responsible of the Nicosia District office of the Road Transport Department and Coordinator of the Concession Agreement for the Public Service of Internal Transport on regular lines in the Geographical area of Larnaca and Famagusta. In 2019 he was promoted to the position of Road Transport Officer A' with the duties of Provincial Office Manager of the Road Transport Department and Head of the Road Transport Supervisory Team. In 2020, he was appointed Senior Public Passenger Transport Officer and performs the duties of head of the Public Passenger Transport Directorate of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.

Julio Tironi

Julio was born in Argentina in October 1971. He is the father of Nicolas (21) and Catalina (16). Apart from Spanish and Portuguese he speaks English and French.

He holds a degree in Economics from Universidad Nacional De Cordoba Argentina. In 1998 he acquired an MBA in TQM for managers from Yokohama University in Japan and in 2005 he completed a 2-year master’s degree in industrial economics specialising in the economy of the transport sector and energy sector from the Carlos III University in Madrid.

Julio started his professional career in 1994 in Casimiro S.A. Argentina, a leading company in urban, interurban and international passenger transportation. In 1998 he became General Manager of TM S.A. Argentina, a TOYOTA vehicle dealer company in four Argentine provinces. Later on, he held the position of General Manager in Arbra S.A., a financial company.

In 2005 he joined the National Express ALSA Group in Spain as Deputy Director responsible for the group’s investment projects in Morocco. In 2008 Julio is transferred to CMC XXI Group as Director of the Transport Division of the Group, position that he holds until today.

Over the years he led a number of transport projects in various countries of South America, Africa and Europe. These include transport related projects in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, Panama, Colombia, and other south American countries. In Europe he has worked in various countries as Spain, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Malta and Cyprus. He has worked in several projects in Africa, especially in Morocco.

He is currently the CEO of MPT (Malta Public Transport) and CPT (Cyprus Public Transport) and he is also a member of the European Committee of the UITP Europe (International Association of Public Transport).

Iker Estébanez

Iker Estébanez has devoted his professional career to the Business Development and Consulting of Technology Systems. After previous experiences in Accenture and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Trade, he joined GMV in 2010, where he has taken different positions in Asia, America and Europe. Currently he is Senior Business Development Manager for the Americas and Europe. He holds a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Navarre topping up this academic training with an international MBA.

Dr. Suzanne Maas

Dr Suzanne Maas has a PhD in Sustainable Mobility from the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development at the University of Malta. Her research focused on the on the use of bicycle sharing systems and the promotion of cycling in a Southern European island context, with case studies in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Limassol (Cyprus) and Malta. She currently works as the Climate Campaign Coordinator at Friends of the Earth Malta, focusing on topics related to climate, energy and mobility. In addition, she continues to work part-time with the University of Malta as a researcher and lecturer. She is also part of the EIT Urban Mobility Hub in Malta, promoting sustainable mobility initiatives in the country, within the context of this European network about research, innovation and technology in the field of mobility. Originally from the Netherlands, she has been cycling for all her life and is now a passionate cyclist and bicycle activist.

Dr. Christos Gkartzonikas

Christos Gartzonikas is a Research Scientist at the Lab for Transport Engineering of the University of Cyprus. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (2012), while he also holds an MSc from the University of Cyprus (2014) and a PhD from Purdue University (2020). His research interests include sustainable transport systems, sustainable mobility issues and emerging transport services such as autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles and carpooling and micro mobility transport.

Sustainable Mobility in Cyprus: Opportunities and Challenges

Apostolos Bizakis

Apostolos Bizakis is a Transportation Specialist - Civil Engineer. He is President and CEO of TREDIT SA – Consulting Engineers from 2006 to today. In his many years of experience, he has actively participated and acted as technical coordinator in a series of important strategic studies in transport, with an emphasis on Sustainable Urban Mobility, the design of Intelligent Transport systems in Greece and abroad. He is a founding member and subsequently a regular member of the ITS Hellas Scientific Association, from 2008 to today.

 Athanasios Kolivas

He is Scientifically qualified in the fields of Transportation, Traffic Management and Sustainable Mobility projects. Specialized in Sustainable Development Strategies and Action Plans for cities and regions, with 10 years of experience in projects receiving European funding. As Project Manager and Head of the Sustainable Mobility Unit of the Municipality of Nicosia, he has led and undertaken matters concerning the implementation of important European projects, within the framework of European Structural Funds during the periods 2014 - 2020 and 2021-2027. 15 years of experience collaborating and managing issues involving government agencies and Local Government Consultants with a focus on implementing projects tailored to cities seeking sustainable development through the integration of smart infrastructure equipment and IoT solutions.

Iason Giraud

Iason Giraud, is a Phd Candidate in computational sciences, in CastorC, of the Cyprus Institute. He holds a Master in Architecture (NTUA 2011), a MSc in the field of Architecture and Spatial Design (NTUA 2015) with a specialization in novel digital design and Fabrication tools and methodologies and a PostGrad Dip (IAAC 2017) with a specialization in robotic fabrication and environmental optimization techniques. Member of FabLab Athens in NTUA till 2019, he has participated in various events and conferences related to digital design, visualization, fabrication, and their relation to circular economies in the urban context and has been a digital design consultant in undergraduate classes in the School of Architecture NTUA.

Evi Anayiotou is a Civil Engineer and has a degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s in Public Administration. She works at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works in the Department of Public Works and is Head of the Sustainable Mobility Section. The responsibilities of the section are the promotion of Sustainable mobility, the multimodality of transport, the green and digital transition of transport based on the European Green Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN and the Strategic Planning of the Ministry. She represents Cyprus at the European Environment Agency in the "Transport and Environment" Committee and is Chair of Technical Committee 7, for "Sustainable Transport", of the European Green Agreement for Cyprus.

Environment and Energy in Transportation

Nasia Kalaika

Nasia Kalaika holds a Master of Engineering (M.Eng) degree in Mechanical Engineering from UMIST University in Manchester, United Kingdom, an MBA from the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM) and a M.Sc. Diploma (PgD) in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK. She also holds the Project Management Professional (PMP) designation for Project Management from the International Certification Organization PMI. She works at the Energy Service of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry and is Officer A in the Internal Energy Market Section. She has experience in the field of Energy and Hydrocarbons and is Project Manager on behalf of the Republic (Project Manager) for the implementation of the Infrastructure Project for the arrival of Liquefied Natural Gas in Cyprus "Cyprus LNG Import Terminal". At the same time, she coordinates and handles issues related to the creation of a market for Natural Gas, Renewable Gases and Hydrogen in Cyprus and the promotion of the green transition through the promotion of the Green Agreement. He chairs the Working Group/Technical Committee on Hydrogen which was established under the Governance System of the European Green Deal for Energy and Climate. He also represents Cyprus in Committees of the European Commission and participates in working groups such as the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF), Hydrogen Energy Network (HyENet) and the Union of the Mediterranean – UfM Gas Platform as a national expert in her fields of competence.

Georgia Christofidou

Georgia Solomonidou Christofidou holds a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and a Master's Degree in Business Administration and Public Administration. She works at the General Directorate of Development of the Ministry of Finance, (former DG EPSA) and is the Director of Sustainable Development. Her main responsibility is to promote the green transition through the promotion of the Green Deal. She is part of the Secretariat for coordination of the Inter-ministerial structure for the Green Deal, while she also chairs the Commission for the socio-economic impacts of the green transition. She is also responsible for the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, for the Improvement of the Regulatory Framework (Better Regulation) and the European Semester, which is the pan-European mechanism for coordinating and monitoring the economies of the EU Member States. She also represents Cyprus in Committees of EU in its fields of competence.

Dr. Nicoletta Kythreotou

Dr. Kythreotou is an Environment Officer A’ and part of the Climate Action and Energy Unit at the Department of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.

Nicoletta holds a Mechanical Engineering PhD from Brunel University in the UK (2014). She also holds an MSc in Environmental Engineering from Imperial College London (2003) while her BSc was on Environmental Science from Lancaster University in the UK (2002).

During Cyprus’ presidency of the European Union (2012), Nicoletta coordinated the European Working Party for International Environmental Issues on Climate Change. She has also participated in a number of private, governmental and European projects related to environmental and climate change issues.

Nicoletta is the National Focal Point of Cyprus to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). As part of the Climate Action and Energy Unit Nicoletta is responsible for:

  • The preparation of annual national greenhouse gas emissions inventory submitted annually to the UNFCCC and the European Union.
  • The preparation of national greenhouse gas emissions projections
  • Coordination of the implementation and monitoring of the National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030
  • Coordination of the implementation and monitoring of the National Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan
  • Participating in processes for the harmonization of Cyprus with the European Union in the fields of climate change, energy and environment
  • • Coordinating activities and programmes related to climate change, energy and the protection of the environment

Nicoletta has participated in national, regional and international conventions, committees and conferences related to climate change and environment, and actively contributed to environmental awareness-raising, sensitization and education of the public. She has played an important role in the promotion of new legislation and policies for climate change.

Michalis Fountoulis

Michalis Fountoulis is a Mechanical Engineer at the Electromechanical Services Department of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.

Konstantina Solomou

Konstantina Solomou is a graduate of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Cyprus and holder of the postgraduate titles MSc (Eng) Transport Planning and Engineering from the University of Leeds and Master in Business Administration from the Mediterranean Institute of Management of Cyprus. During 2016-2018, she worked as a Transport Engineer in the UK on public and private sector transport projects.  

From 2018 until today, she works at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works as a Transport Engineer in public transport service and infrastructure development projects, electrification, as well as sustainable mobility.

Alexandros Kamberos

Alexandros was born in the United States of America in 1978 and is the father of Demetris (14) and Kyriacos (10). He speaks English, Greek, Spanish and German.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Electronic Media from the University of Indianapolis and a Master’s in Management from Wolverhampton University.

He has held various positions in blue chip companies and start-ups ranging from online casino Cryptologic to taxi hailing app Gett, working in the USA, Germany, Russia, England, Israel, Greece, and Cyprus implementing teams. In 2020 he joined Cyprus Public Transport as Business Development Manager.

Throughout his career he has promoted a customer centric environment both within and outside. Working to improve processes and communication for the benefit of customers to enjoy an impeccable service and an excellent experience.

Iraklis D. Bourantas, Co-founder & COO Novoville

Iraklis is a tech enthusiast and co-founder of the technology start-up company Novoville, a platform that facilitates Municipality-to-Municipality communication, digital services for citizens and sustainable mobility in their cities and currently operates in more than 80 Municipalities in 3 European countries. In 2018 Novoville was awarded as one of the 10 best startups in Europe in the field of Government Technology (GovTech), while in 2020 it was included in the 100 best startup companies in the world, in the field of Civic Technology.

From 2004 to 2013 he was head of the educational activities of the AIT Technological Institute of the Intracom Group. A devotee of social change through education and technology, he believes that "Gen Y" will change the world as we know it.

Iraklis has actively participated in the Greek ecosystem of startups from 2009 to the present, while he was awarded with the "best mentor award" of the Athens Startup Weekend, powered by Google for Entrepreneurs in 2014. In 2013, his team was awarded at the International Create Challenge Innovation Competition in Switzerland and in 2017 with the Novoville team they were selected among the 10 best GovTech startups in Great Britain and participated in the GovStart program, supported by the British Government.

His studies include a bachelor's degree in international relations and economics from the University of Macedonia, a master's degree in digital systems from the University of Piraeus, and an executive diploma in crisis management from Harvard University.

Dr. Charalambos Menelaou received his bachelor's degree (BSc) and doctoral degree (PhD) from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus, in 2013 and 2020, respectively. Today he is a Research Fellow at the KIOS Center of Excellence for Research and Innovation (KIOS CoE) of the University of Cyprus. His research interests focus on the control and optimization of large-scale urban networks and routing techniques for connected-autonomous vehicles. Dr. Charalambos also has experience in large-scale traffic simulations and has participated in various national and European projects related to smart cities and sustainable mobility. In addition, he has written more than 20 articles in international scientific journals and conference proceedings.

Dr. Charalambos is an active member of the Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) including the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems and IEEE Vehicular Technology Societies.

Aristotelis Savva

Aristotelis Savva holds an honors and master’s degree from University of Glasgow in Civil Engineering, and an MBA Degree from University of Edinburgh. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer, member of the Institute of Civil Engineers in the UK and the Cyprus Scientific Chamber (ETEK). For seventeen years he lived and worked in Scotland on transportation and regeneration projects, but also on business planning and Quality Assurance Systems. Since 2006 he has been working for Public Works Department of Ministry of Transport in Cyprus, in a various projects including, the preparation of the new Public Transport Concession Contracts which are in place for 2020 to 2030 and EU co-funded ITS projects, which concern both the road network and the public transport service by bus. He is also coordinating the efforts within the Public Works Department to improve Public Transport Infrastructure across Cyprus.

Iakovos Gryllis

Georgios Tsegas

Georgios Tsegas is a postdoctoral researcher at the Sustainability Engineering Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Department of AUTH. He holds a degree in Physics (1995) from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and a PhD in Physics (2000) from AUTH with an active research activity in the field of numerical models of atmospheric circulation and air quality. For the last 17 years, he has participated as an expert in international and Greek research projects on air pollution in urban areas and as a researcher in air quality impact assessment projects. Since 2009, he has been providing consulting services to the Department of Labor Inspection of the Ministry of Labor and Social Insurance of Cyprus with the object of operational assessment of air quality using specialized software.

Dr. Loukas Dimitriou

Dr. Loukas Dimitriou has completed his undergraduate studies at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He then obtained a Doctoral Diploma from the Department of Transport and Transportation Infrastructure of the NTUA in optimal design of transport systems. During the period 2011-2013, he was an Assistant Professor at King Saud University, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Prince Mohamed bin Naif Chair for Traffic Safety Research, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Polytechnic School of the University of Cyprus, in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, while he is the head of the Transportation Engineering Laboratory. His academic and professional activity concerns the quantitative analysis and design of political and transportation infrastructure systems, the use of advanced techniques and methods to optimize their performance and the development of decision support frameworks in this field.

Dr. Symeon Christodoulou

Dr. Christodoulou is a graduate of New York's Columbia University (Columbia University), where he first studied with a scholarship from the Agency for International Development (AID) to obtain an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering (BSc 1991) and then with an academic and research scholarship from university for postgraduate degrees in Civil Engineering (MSc 1992, MPhil 1996, PhD 1998). Upon completion of his doctoral degree, and after several years of professional career in the field of construction project management, Dr. Christodoulou joined the academic staff of the Polytechnic University (New York) as an assistant professor, responsible for the construction management branch of the civil engineering department (1998-2003). In 2004 he returned to Cyprus, and after a short employment in the public works construction industry he joined the academic staff of the University of Cyprus as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (2004-present), while at the same time he taught in the postgraduate program of the Democritus University of Thrace (Xanthi) as a research associate and visiting professor. Dr. Christodoulou is the author of several scientific publications, the recipient of significant research funding in excess of one million euros (including funding from the US NSF Foundation, the Marie Curie IRSES program of the European Union and the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation) and the recipient of an international research award (London, 1999). Also, Dr. Christodoulou is the national representative of Cyprus in the central committee of the European COST program "Transport and Urban Development", he is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a scientific reviewer in scientific journals such as the "Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering" (ASCE), “Journal of Construction Engineering and Management” (ASCE), “Journal of Water Resources Management” (Springer), “Journal of Construction Management and Economics” (Taylor and Francis), and the “Journal of Automation in Construction” (Elsevier). At the University of Cyprus, Dr. Christodoulou actively participated in several departmental and university committees of his specialty, contributing the most to the administrative work of the University. These include the Building Development Organization Committee, the Building Facilities Variance Request Management Committee, the Campus Development Consultant Evaluation Committee, and the Computer Supply Bid Evaluation Committee.

Dr. Christos Kyrkou

Dr. Christos Kyrkou is a Research Lecturer at the KIOS Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence (KIOS CoE) of the University of Cyprus. He holds a bachelor's degree (2008), a master's degree (2010), and a PhD (2014) from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus. He has more than 50 publications in internationally recognized scientific journals and conferences in the field of machine learning and computer vision. Specifically, his research interests concern the creation of innovative architectural and technical neural networks, and image categorization and object recognition algorithms, with an emphasis on real-time applications. He has experience in national and European research projects on autonomous vehicles, intelligent systems for disaster management, traffic monitoring with drones, and smart camera networks. Dr. Kyrkou is an active member of the Technical Advisor of the State and Citizens (ETEK).

Transportation Data: The future in Data Analysis – Future Developments

George Christou

George is a GIS Specialist with a focus on Intelligent Transport Systems and Sustainable Mobility. He works at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (University of Cyprus) as a Senior Research Engineer. He holds a BEng in Surveying and Geo-Information Engineering from the Cyprus University of Technology an MSc. in Spatio-Temporal Analysis and Big Data Mining from the University College London, and an MBA from CIIM. He previously worked in London as a Transport Consultant where he worked in several high-profile transport projects in the UK working on data analysis and visualisation, spatial analysis, mapping, asset management and transport modelling.

Timo Hoffmann

Transport geographer by education, Timo Hoffmann is working in the Connected Mobility section at the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), where he is co-managing the German National Access Point and National Body for traffic and mobility data. He is involved in a number of national and European projects related to mobility data and connectivity. For two years he has been the Technical Group Chair of the Data Task Force and later the Data For Road Safety partnership, which focusses on the exchange of vehicle-generated and safety related data. Since 2021 he is the General Secretary of NAPCORE, the National Access Point Coordination Organisation for Europe.

Dimitris Michail

Dimitris Michail is a graduate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Applied Mathematics and a holder of an MSc Operational Research from London School of Economics and a Master’s in Public Sector Management from the Cyprus International Institute of Management. He joined the Public Administration and Personnel Department of the Ministry of Finance in 2006 and he has been leading the Cyprus Open Data Team since its inception in 2009. He represents the Republic of Cyprus in EU PSI Work Groups and participates as a rapporteur at various conferences on Open Data. In the past and between 2001-2006, he has worked as a Business Analyst at the MTV Network Headquarters and as a Senior Operational Researcher at the UK Department of Education and Skills, in London.

Madiha Shahzad

Madiha Shahzad is a Research Associate at the KIOS CoE where she is involved in European-wide activity to develop and deploy harmonized National Access Points (NAPs) for transportation related data. Madiha received her PhD in mobile networks from the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK (2012). Her research interests include intelligent transport systems, with an emphasis on data standards, European initiatives and future service provision and computer networks and protocols, with an emphasis on cellular and vehicular networks. Previously, she worked at University of the Central Lancashire, Cyprus, as Special Scientist and Associate Lecturer, at National University of Science and Technology, Pakistan, as Assistant Professor and at University of the West of England, UK, as a Research Associate. She has participated in various EU-funded research projects and authored/co-authored numerous research publications.

Rodolfo Da Silva

Rodolfo is working at KIOS CoE as a Researcher Engineer. He joined KIOS in 2021 and is specialized in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with a focus on Intelligent Transport Systems and Sustainable Mobility. Rodolfo received his MSc in Land Management and Monitoring from the University of Tomar, Portugal (2005). He previously worked as GIS and Remote Sensing Expert in the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Bonn (2015 – 2020), Researcher and GIS Expert in the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, Germany (2012-2015) and as GIS expert in Lisbon, Portugal (2005-2010).
