On February 27 and 28, 2025, a successful training seminar on Cyprus' Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) took place in Nicosia. The event offered a valuable opportunity for skill development and knowledge sharing for 29 urban transport professionals. The seminar was organized by the European Investment Bank's JASPERS technical advisory team in collaboration with the Public Works Department of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.

The seminar opened with a welcome address from Mr. Eleftherios Eleftheriou, Director of the Public Works Department of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works of Cyprus, followed by introductory remarks from representatives of EIB-JASPERS. JASPERS is a partnership funded by the European Commission and the European Investment Bank that provides guidance on strategies and projects that support a greener Europe.

The training included 9 modules—3 core and 6 optional—providing in-depth insight into best practices and challenges in SUMP development. On the first day, participants explored topics on SUMP methodology and practice, examined the link between strategic planning and project preparation, and exchanged views on developing multimodal transport plans. The day continued with sessions on active transport modes and micromobility, and concluded with a focus on inclusive and accessible mobility.

The second day focused on SUMPs in small and medium-sized cities, spatial planning, and environmental considerations. The event wrapped up with a detailed review of road safety and spatial planning.

During the seminar, key contributions were made by Mr. Kyriakos Kakouris, Vice President of the EIB, and Mr. Charalambos Prountzos, Mayor of Nicosia.

The success of this seminar highlights how gaining new skills and knowledge is essential to building more sustainable cities. A big thank you to all participants for their strong and active engagement.
