Short Description of the Project

Construction of Cycling Infrastructure Connecting Nicosia's Universities with the City Center Phases A & B

This project forms part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable urban mobility and encourage the use of bicycles as an alternative means of transport. It comprises four distinct phases that together establish a continuous and unified network of cycle paths linking the universities of Nicosia to the city center. Phases A and B were co-financed by the European Union’s Cohesion Fund and national resources, through the Operational Programme “Competitiveness and Sustainable Development”. The Department of Public Works is the designated Beneficiary and Implementing Authority of the project.

 

Phase A: University of Nicosia – Kykkos Monastery Estate

  • Length of Cycling Infrastructure: Approximately 3 km
  • Budget: €924.590
  • Location: Municipality of Nicosia (Engomi area)
  • Works Included: Construction of a 3-meter-wide cycle path through green space, crosswalks, bicycle parking stations, accessibility infrastructure for people with disabilities
  • Implementation Period: May 2016 – September 2020 (across two contracts)

 

Phase B: Kykkos Monastery Estate – Solomou Square

  • Length of Cycling Infrastructure: Approximately 3.5 km
  • Budget: €2.436.965
  • Location: Municipality of Nicosia
  • Works Included: Cycle lanes on the roadway, within the Public Garden, and on shared pedestrian paths, and construction of a 20-meter bridge for pedestrians and cyclists over the Pedieos River.
  • Implementation Period: August 2020 – October 2021
