Upgrading Public Transport Infrastructure (Bus Stations, Stops, and Shelters) and Transition to Electrification
Upgrading Public Transport Infrastructure (Bus Stations, Stops, and Shelters) and Transition to Electrification
Fund: European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
Cohesion Policy Programme: THALEIA 2021–2027
Specific Objective: Promotion of sustainable, multimodal urban mobility as a means of transitioning to a zero carbon emission economy.
Budget: €71 million
Project Summary
The project focuses on upgrading infrastructure and gradually transitioning public transport fleets to electrification, while simultaneously generating electricity through environmentally friendly methods and ensuring multimodality in transportation.
The project includes:
- The upgrading of central bus stations.
- The upgrading of bus stops and shelters.
- The creation of infrastructure enabling the introduction of electrification to bus fleets.
Expected Benefits/Results
The new and smart bus stops and shelters will provide both protection from weather conditions and real-time information to the public through state-of-the-art digital screens, smart lighting, Wi-Fi, and mobile device charging. These smart stops are also specifically designed to be accessible to Persons with Disabilities (PwD). Additionally, an audio announcement system will inform passengers of approaching buses. The upgrading of bus stations is an essential prerequisite for ensuring passenger convenience, safe mobility, and increased use of public transport — along with all the positive impacts this brings. In addition, the introduction of electric buses is expected to serve the cores of historic city centers, helping to reduce emissions in densely built urban areas and locations with high visitor activity, resulting in significant benefits for air quality, public health, and overall urban wellbeing.
