Development of the Nicosia Bus/Tram Priority Axis with the introduction of bus lanes in the first phase

Short Description

Development of the Nicosia Bus/Tram Priority Axis with the introduction of bus lanes in the first phase

Fund: European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

Cohesion Policy Programme: THALEIA 2021–2027

Specific Objective:: Promotion of sustainable, multimodal urban mobility as a means of transitioning to a zero carbon emission economy.

Budget: €5 million

Project Summary

The project concerns the construction and operation of bus lanes along Nicosia’s main urban corridors — Limassol/Makariou Avenue and Strovolos/Severis Avenue — with the aim of improving the speed and reliability of public passenger transport. It includes the implementation of horizontal and vertical road signage, as well as the optimisation and coordination of traffic lights to ensure bus priority.

Expected Benefits/Results

The bus lanes contribute to reducing travel time for buses, allowing them to move unhindered by traffic congestion from other vehicles. This makes routes faster and more reliable, improving passenger service and encouraging more citizens to use public transport instead of private cars. At the same time, increased bus use helps reduce traffic, air pollution, and noise, enhancing sustainable mobility and overall quality of life in the city.
